“Diggin in the Crates” from Sean Young, AWBY (Art Work by Young)Now showing at the “Diggin in the Crates” blends pop art, music, and vivid color to illustrate influential African-American jazz artists and their influences on hip-hop. One of the best experiences a hip-hop fan can have is listening to an album over the years and hearing a loop that you thought was original, only to discover the older jazz song from which it was sampled. That discovery leads to a “dig” about the artist, the artist’s life, and the culture and politics of the time. AWBY is a Tampa-based graphic designer/visual artist. The California native graduated with an A.A. in Graphic Design. This exhibit will be on display at the Woodson through the end of May 2018. |

The HighwaymenNow showing at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum In the late 1950s along the central east coast of Florida, a small group of African American artists started a business venture that wasn’t suppose to happen: they painted. They painted during the Jim Crow era in the south where most of the jobs available to African Americans were low paying labor employment. Twenty-six artists from the Vero Beach/Ft. Pierce area were the core group of artists. In the mid-1990s these artists were given the name “The Highwaymen” because of their method of sales. They traveled along the highways selling their artwork to business owners, read estate brokers, lawyers, banks, and individuals. The Highwaymen created an estimate 200,000 paintings. Many were purchased by tourists. This artwork has spread across the country. The artists captured Florida’s natural beauty. Backwoods scenes, breaking waves, palm-lined beaches, and river scenes are just a small portion of The Highwaymen’s work. The Highwaymen will be at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum from November 4, 2017 – January 30, 2018. |
