Today we celebrate and honor the birth of the man known as the father of African American History, Dr. Carter G Woodson.

Carter Godwin Woodson was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study African-American history.

About the Event:
The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum will be hosting an opportunity to converse with the Queen herself, Ms. Ericka Dunlap, Miss America 2004, Miss Florida 2003. She is the first African-American woman to win Miss Florida. This is an RSVP event and reservations are required and filling up fast. This is a community wide initiative brought to you by the Legacy Entertainment & Arts Foundation, and the Dr. Carter G Woodson African American History Museum. Everyone is invited to join in and participate by bringing a doll that looks like you to our annual Doll and Toy Drive, or $25 donation for deserving youth benefiting YMCA, Gathering of Woman and more. During this event there will be special Guest Performances and so much more to make the evening festive and entertaining for the entire family.

Come see the extraordinary work of this talented Artist/ Painter who’s work primarily encompasses people and their expressions, with an ending goal of reflecting their emotions through his painting. Eluster works primarily in watercolor, which is an additional challenge, but he does work in other mediums as well that you will see in this exhibit.

Localicious is The FREE “IN THE DIP” Eating & Drinking Festival here in the city of St. Petersburg and is the biggest event of LOCALICIOUS Eat LOCAL Drink LOCAL Week and it’s taking place on National Food Day! It’s called “IN THE DIP” because where it’s being held is the field that the City of St. Pete used to refer to as “The Dip” (across from the Manhattan Casino).

Keep St Pete LIT: Narrative Elements-Tell It, Show It (Part I) and Write It, Perform It (Part II)

Come enjoy this exciting writing workshop that teaches you how to write, create and perform your own writing creations. In part I, participants will use close-reading and practice exercises to explore the basic principles of story — narrative voice/point of view, characters, conflict, and setting. In part II, participants will craft their own stories and poems using the narrative tools and story basics learned in part I, then apply reading and performance techniques to share their work with an audience in a culminating open mic storytelling event.

Hidden Colors is the name of an on going documentary film series directed by Tariq Nasheed and produced through King Flex Entertainment who come to explain and describe the marginalizing of African Americans in America and the world. In Our Own Words: A Sonic Memory Quilt Experience

African American History is frequently told through words and music. The “In Our Own Words: A Sonic Memory Quilt sound installation project seeks to fully embrace our rich tradition of story telling while reaching beyond the stereotype that black music is only blues or jazz music. As you move through the museum and gardens depending on what time you arrive, by design what you experience in the work will change. The purpose of this installation is to help broaden the perspective, promote understanding, appreciation to the many creative things possible from African American Artists. This will be an experience you don’t want to miss.

 

The Installation begins each day at 6:00PM and runs til 10:00PM.

 

Funding for this program has been generously provided by the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance & The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

The board, members, and friends of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum will host a Candlelight Vigil in memory of LaMour, India and Tehira Welch, Antwayne Robinson, Jennifer Zunia and her six year old son on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in the museum’s Legacy Garden, 2240 Ninth Avenue South, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The museum anticipates showing the works of Tehira, a student of art at Gibbs High School studying in the Pinellas County Center for the Art’s program. Copies of India’s recently release CD will also be available for sale.
A GoFundMe account has been established in the name of “Welch Angels Fund” and individuals are encouraged to make donations to offset funeral expenses. A scholarship fund has also been established for the surviving Welch children at: Achieva Credit Union c/o C & M Welch Foundation,

MAP…Mom’s & Police Community Conversation

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum will present an insightful discussion entitled, Moms And Police ” MAP” Navigating the Path for a New Generation.

Many are aware of the ongoing concerns parents have regarding African American youth and law enforcement across the country. Therefore, the Dr.Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum Board and Friends will continuously promote events to stress that in St. Petersburg, “Black Lives Matter.”

During Women’s History Month, mothers will have the opportunity to meet and greet St. Petersburg’s Police Chief Anthony Holloway and current and former female law enforcement personnel during a reception that will precede the MAP conversation. Former St. Petersburg Police Major Hope Crews and retired Sherriff Officer Edie Darling will facilitate the evenings’ event. Chief Holloway will introduce two female Top Cops who will engage in dialogue regarding police related matters, and how moms can assist law enforcement in their roles in helping to keep our youth safe.

* CARTER G. WOODSON BLACK CINEMA & DISCUSSION SERIES: 12 YEARS A SLAVE… In the years before the Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Subjected to the cruelty of one malevolent owner (Michael Fassbender), he also finds unexpected kindness from another, as he struggles continually to survive and maintain some of his dignity. Then in the 12th year of the disheartening ordeal, a chance meeting with an abolitionist from Canada changes Solomon’s life forever.

Matriarch Lena Younger (Claudia McNeil) promptly puts a down payment on a house in an all-white suburban neighborhood. But the family is divided when Lena entrusts the balance of the money to her mercurial son Walter Lee (Poitier), against the wishes of her daughter (Diana Sands) and daughter-in-law (Ruby Dee).
