Dr. Carter G Woodson’s Birthday
December 19, 1875 Today we celebrate and honor the birth of the man known as the father of African American History, Dr. Carter G Woodson. Carter Godwin Woodson was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study African-American history.

In Our Own Words: A Sonic Memory Quilt
In Our Own Words: A Sonic Memory Quilt Experience African American History is frequently told through words and music. The “In Our Own Words: A Sonic Memory Quilt sound installation project seeks to fully embrace our rich tradition of story telling while reaching beyond the stereotype that black music is only blues or jazz music. As you move through the museum and gardens depending on what time you arrive, by design what you experience in the work will change. The purpose of this installation is to help broaden the perspective, promote understanding, appreciation to the many creative things possible from African American Artists. This will be an experience you don’t want to miss.
The Installation begins each day at 6:00PM and runs til 10:00PM.

MAP- Mom’s & Police Commuity Conversation
MAP…Mom’s & Police Community Conversation In conjunction with Women’s History Month, the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum will present an insightful discussion entitled, Moms And Police ” MAP” Navigating the Path for a New Generation. Many are aware of the ongoing concerns parents have regarding African American youth and law enforcement across the country. Therefore, the Dr.Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum Board and Friends will continuously promote events to stress that in St. Petersburg, “Black Lives Matter.” During Women’s History Month, mothers will have the opportunity to meet and greet St. Petersburg’s Police Chief Anthony Holloway and current and former female law enforcement personnel during a reception that will precede the MAP conversation. Former St. Petersburg Police Major Hope Crews and retired Sherriff Officer Edie Darling will facilitate the evenings’ event. Chief Holloway will introduce two female Top Cops who will engage in dialogue regarding police related matters, and how moms can assist law enforcement in their roles in helping to keep our youth safe.
